At a glance Krista Parrish will most likely draw you in with her beauty and contagious smile but underneath the surface lies a deeply intellectual, timeless song writer and it doesn’t stop there. Not only can Krista sing circles around most, write clever lyrics that will touch your heart, she can play the strings off a guitar. She is known for her cutting edge guitar work, unique picking style, percussive strumming, her lead guitar playing and intricate yet catchy chord progressions. Unlike most singer songwriters who strum while allowing their vocals to be the main focus, Krista amazes audiences with her advanced style of playing and ability to sing just as intricately simultaneously. Along with her guitar abilities, improvisational skills and finger picking, she sings with emotion and honesty, sweet yet raw whether she is scatting
or breaking your heart with a sultry tone.
Although Krista has been compared to singer songwriters such as Fiona Apple, Norah Jones and Nellie McKay, she has a very unique style in which she combines jazz, blues, folk, soul and funk. Krista is the product of a classical guitarist, Dennis Parrish and opera singer Faith Blee. Surrounded by good music, she would follow in the footsteps of her parents but take a slightly jazzier road. Krista majored in jazz guitar/voice and minored in piano in college and was very lucky to have amazingly talented teachers to guide her in the right direction. She was always encouraged to continue with her original compositions and often performed her own songs at college concerts instead of the regular curriculum.
As time went on, her sound quickly evolved into a jazzy soulful sound with songs like Keep Your Eyes Closed and Best of Me. She spent most weekends at her father’s home studio where she recorded four full length albums: Introducing Krista Parrish, Acoustically Yours, Taking Chances and Introspection. Krista was never hard up for a gig as she played at countless venues doing her solo original material and also playing with professional jazz bands in the Philadelphia area doing corporate work. She played with many different musicians as she was trying to form the band that would back her and she finally found her match in husband Steven Murphy on bass, father Dennis Parrish on guitar, Chad Brown on drums and Mark Albright on saxophone.
There is never a dull moment in a Krista Parrish show as she takes the music to high levels with her soulful band and breaks into an acoustic trio with guitars and mandolin or sends chills up your spine with her solo performances. In 2007, Krista was offered two licensing agreements for her music to be used on television, she opened for guitar legend Jim Weider formerly a member of the musical act “THE BAND”, known for their hit The Weight (take a load off annie), she released a five track EP titled Half Myself, and has several songs topping soul/jazz music charts. She continues to wow her fans with her intense live performances. The honesty and vulnerability in her music makes it easy to identify with her. When you hear Krista’s provocative sultry voice, it’s not easily forgotten and impossible not to fall in love with. Krista practically entered this world singing and from what she has accomplished thus far will most likely leave the same way.
