us-scotthThough Scott Haskitt’s unique, emotive baritone is undoubtedly the first thing to draw in his audience, the ability to sing was the most unintentional addition to his musicianship. As a multi-instrumentalist, his love for writing music on every instrument he could get his hands on as a kid eventually required of him the ability to sing. Now after years of playing drums, guitar or producing records for artists such as The Churchills (Spin City, Scrubs, MTV’s Juvies), Nancy Micciulla, Andrew Holtz and Justin Glanville, Scott has finally cleared enough space and time to devote to his own song and voice.

On his newest full-length record “Anchors & Oceans” (August 2009), the balance of power between music and voice is achieved without compromise. Lush, layered productions such as “Under The Same Weight” feature cello, rhodes piano and mellotron flutes. More sparse arrangements such as “Inside The Glow” are moved by Peter Gabriel-esque mallet drum grooves and tightly woven blues guitar phrasing. Perhaps the most prevalent instrumental common thread in this group of songs is lap steel and pedal steel guitars.

A Philadelphia native, Scott has jumped in and out of the scene for years in venues such as (the late) Grape Street Pub, Burlap and Bean, The Point, The Raven Lounge, Cedar Hollow Inn and Steel City Coffeehouse. Philadelphia is given much mention in songs like “Sparks On The Delaware”, which has been featured on XPN and Hometown Heroes as well as several Pittsburgh Local stations. Though not necessarily a concept album, Scott describes the songs on “Anchors & Oceans” as lyrically “fitting either the idea of being held steady by something, or that of being pulled away by something… hence the title”. Scott’s recent move to New Haven, CT would suggest that there were fewer anchors than oceans somewhere along the way.
